Ophthalmic Consultation
Tonometry
Tonometry is used for measurement of intraocular pressure. We use tonovet (a rebound tonometer) to measure the IOP. This is a very crucial diagnostic test to diagnose Glaucoma vs Uveitis.
Schirmer Tear Test
Schirmer Tear Test involves putting a specially designed strip in the eye to measure tear production and helps diagnose dry eye, which is a very common condition in dogs.
Dye Test
Fluorescein staining is a diagnostic procedure in which a fluorescent dye is applied to the cornea to reveal any abrasions or ulcers. When exposed to a blue light, the dye illuminates affected areas, allowing for clear visualization of corneal damage under a slit lamp examination. This test is highly effective in identifying even minute disruptions in the corneal epithelium.
Fundoscopy (Indirect ophthalmoscopy)
This is a procedure used to examine the deeper structures of your pet's eye, such as the retina with the help of special light and lenses.
Slit lamp Biomicroscope
is examination of the front part of the eye under high magnification. This allows us to identify microscopic problems which are not visible to normal eye.
Chromatic PLR Testing
This is a basic test to check the health of the retina. We have a specialized machine which emits specific frequency red and blue light. We record the response to this light which helps us diagnose retinal problems. If we feel that further testing is required, we recommend Electroretinography test.
Advanced Diagnostics
Some cases require additional diagnostic tests to understand the complete nature of the disease. The Eye Vet provides access to these tests and services as a part of our comprehensive approach to patient care.
Cytology
A Corneal or conjunctival scrape is collected for cytology to look for cells or bacteria. A sterile swab is also collected at the same time for culture and sensitivity. This is highly recommended for accurate diagnosis and treatment of infectious conditions. The collected sample is sent to a specialized lab for analysis and reporting. Our expert Doctors then review the report and determine further course of treatment.
Biopsy
A small tissue sample from the area of interest is collected. If cancer is suspected or a lesion cannot be diagnosed with other diagnostic methods then a biopsy is indicated. The biopsied sample is sent to a lab for analysis and reporting.
Ocular Ultrasound
Ocular Ultrasound is performed using a special ultrasound probe placed on the eye. This is a non-painful process because the cornea of your pet is numbed using topical anesthetic eyedrops. This diagnostic method is a great tool to examine the internal structures of the eye if the transparency of the ocular structures is limited. Eg. Cataract, corneal opacity etc.
Gonioscopy
Gonioscopy is a specialized diagnostic procedure used to examine the front part of the eye called the iridocorneal angle, where aqueous humor (the fluid within the eye) drains out. This area is crucial in maintaining normal eye pressure. In pets, gonioscopy is particularly important because certain breeds are predisposed to glaucoma, a serious eye condition that can lead to blindness if untreated. Regular screening, especially for at-risk breeds, is key to maintaining your pet's eye health and vision. The procedure is non-invasive and is typically done under sedation or with local anesthesia to ensure the pet's comfort. A special contact lens called a gonioscopy lens is placed on the cornea of your pet's eye. The vet then uses a slit lamp or an indirect ophthalmoscope to examine the iridocorneal angle through the lens.
Electroretinogram (ERG)
ERG is a highly specialized machine that measures the electrical impulses generated by the retina when a bright light is shone in the eye. The readings get recorded in a waveform, the height of the wave correlates to the health of the retina. We routinely perform ERG prior to cataract surgery in order to check the health of the retina. This test is especially helpful if Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is suspected in a patient.
