Prolapsed Eyeball The Eye Vet

Prolapsed Eyeball

We offer emergency surgical intervention for prolapsed eyeball, assessing viability and performing globe replacement or removal to prioritize your pet’s eye health and comfort.

Replacement of the proptosed eyeball

Animals with flat faces like Shih Tzu, Pug, Himalayan or persian cats have a very shallow orbit and large eyelid openings. Due to this, the eyes can pop out of the socket with a little pressure on the neck or if your pet gets into a fight. This is a surgical emergency and the eyeball needs to be replaced as soon as possible. At the time of presentation, we first check if the eyeball is viable. As in some cases, if the eyeball prolapses with a very high force, the optic nerve gets damaged or the extraocular muscles break. In this situation, the vision cannot be restored and the eyeball does not stay in the socket even if one of the extraocular muscles is broken. In this situation, owners are informed about possible outcomes and are offered removal of the eyeball or eyeball replacement surgery. If the eyeball or vision is viable, then we replace the globe under general anesthesia and stitch the eyelids temporarily for 10 days.
